Look at all those zeros

It's not book burning! The maps still exist.

It's more like cleaning up the catalog so people might actually read other books besides porn. It's like a restaurant that has too many items on the menu, or netflix decluttering their UI. It's not like book burning :o 8-)
Take five chimpanzees. Put them in a big cage. Suspend some bananas from the roof of the cage. Provide the chimpanzees with a stepladder. BUT also add a proximity detector to the bananas, so that when a chimp goes near the banana, water hoses are triggered and the whole cage is thoroughly soaked.

Soon, the chimps learn that the bananas and the stepladder are best ignored.

Now, remove one chimp, and replace it with a fresh one. That chimp knows nothing of the hoses. He sees the banana, notices the stepladder, and because he is a smart primate, he envisions himself stepping on the stepladder to reach the bananas. He then deftly grabs the stepladder... and the four other chimps spring on him and beat him squarely. He soon learns to ignore the stepladder.

Then, remove another chimp and replace it with a fresh one. The scenario occurs again; when he grabs the stepladder, he gets mauled by the four other chimps -- yes, including the previous "fresh" chimp. He has integrated the notion of "thou shallt not touch the stepladder".

Iterate. After some operations, you have five chimps who are ready to punch any chimp who would dare touch the stepladder -- and none of them knows why.

We have all those maps to choose from, but that's like going up the ladder.

2 thoughts:
1. People are lazy and click on one of the currently voted-for maps in front of them. Is there a way to disable that ability and make people pick from the list to make a vote? That's client-side mods, right, so is that even possible? My go-to method is to click on sort to see which maps that have been played the most or the least and pick from those. (Not the best, but it's easy.)

2. CEONSS has a longer wait time than we do when people are voting for maps, maybe increasing that time would help?

Please do not entertain idea #1, that'll just piss a lot of people off, me included. Quit trying to cure peoples' laziness and "Nazi-style map-burning" McLovin!

I could agree with #2. I know we already increased a little, but with all the new maps needing to be re-download by most players frequently, even with the extended time they're not in before the balancer kicks in. It should be increased a bit more, bit certainly not as long as CEONSS, their match start takes forever.

So we increased the wait time AFTER a map is voted in... this gives enough time ( 30s ) to grab a beer, release a beer or get the map from the redirect down and loaded. It seems like that's been enough time...maybe not if you have to download a bunch of vehicle files, but otherwise it makes everyone else wait.

We haven't increased the map vote time. It was set at 50

Code: Select all

[xVoting.xVotingHandler]
VoteTimeLimit=50
I just upped it to 70 which seems plenty long imo, which I think is the default. Keep in mind you don't have to wait the full time once the majority (51%) is reached. Maybe the extra time will encourage the masses to actually vote.

There's other options too (All below are currently false)
  • bScoreMode (True/False) Setting this to True will give players move votes based on their score. Example: At the end of a DeathMatch game you have 10 frags and then you vote for DM-Phobos2 then it will place 10 votes for DM-Phobos2.
    Default is False
  • bAccumulationMode (True/False)Setting this to True will cause non-winning and unused votes to carry over to the next game. If the map you voted for wins then you will not carry over votes to the next game. If the Map you voted for does NOT win then the amount of votes you currently have will carry over.
    Default is False
  • bEliminationMode (True/False) Setting this to True will disable voting for previously played maps until there are only N enabled maps left in the map list. N is MinMapCount (see below).
This is accomplished by incrementing the RepeatLimit after each game. You can use this mode to force players to play all the maps instead of just the popular ones.
    Default is False
EliminationMode is interesting, but would likely piss people off - as they couldn't play Dria-Boring every night.

Any of those options would be quite a change. I like the increase in voting time though. At least giving everyone more time to take a break since there is more of a crackdown on being afk during matches.

This sounds exactly like my 8th-grade history teacher's ideas. He was pissed that a university professor's political vote counted exactly the same as high school dropout's, LOL
